SURVIVORS OF INDIGENOUS RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS IN CANADA DEMAND APOLOGY AND RELEASE OF RECORDS
|
|
JUNE 2, 2021; CANADA.
Ending Clergy Abuse, (ECA), a global network of clergy abuse survivors and activists, was horrifying to learn of the deaths and cover-up of 215 innocent indigenous children found buried on the residential school grounds at the Kamloops Residential School. The Kamloops Residential School in British Columbia was operated by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate up to 1969. St. Anne’s Residential School in Fort Albany, Ontario, was
operated by the same Catholic Order.
Evelyn Korkmaz, a founding member of Ending Clergy Abuse, (ECA), is a survivor of the sexual abuse endured at St. Anne’s Residential School in Fort Albany, Canada. There are 139 residential schools across Canada, and she reports that “although, we as residential school survivors have known of these burial grounds, we had no proof of their exact location and this discovery has rocked survivors and Canada to the
core…
JUNE 24, 2021; SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA.
An indigenous group in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan said it had found the unmarked graves of an estimated 751 people, many of whom were children, at a now-defunct Catholic residential school, just weeks after a similar discovery of 215 indigenous children in Kamloops, British Columbia rocked the country.
JUNE 22, 2021; WASHINGTON, D.C.
Archbishop Marcel Damphousse of Ottawa-Cornwall on June 17 apologized for the role of the Catholic Church in administering the country’s residential school system, and requested a formal apology by Pope Francis.
“As we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day, I extend my sincere apology for the involvement of the Catholic Church in the residential school system, and I pray for healing as the Church in Canada walks the path of reconciliation with the Indigenous people in our community.” (exerpt from Catholic News Agency article by Christine Rousselle)
JUNE 29, 2021; ROME:
Pope Francis has agreed to meet in December with Indigenous survivors of Canada’s notorious residential schools amid calls for a papal apology for the Catholic Church’s role in the abuse and deaths of thousands of native children. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops said Francis had invited the delegations to the Vatican and would meet separately with three groups – First Nations, Metis and
Inuit.
The Canadian bishops didn’t mention the demand for a papal apology saying only that Francis was “deeply committed to hearing directly from Indigenous peoples.”

UN EXPERTS CALL ON HOLY SEE TO DO MORE AGAINST CHILD ABUSE
|
|
JUNE 21, 2021; GENEVA (AP).
Independent human rights experts working with the United Nations have urged the Vatican to do more to stop and prevent violence and sexual abuse against children, citing “persistent allegations of obstruction and lack of cooperation” from the Catholic Church, the U.N. human rights office said.
The four experts, faulted efforts by the church “to protect alleged abusers, cover up crimes, obstruct accountability of alleged abusers, and evade reparations due to victims.”
In general terms, the experts alleged bids were made by some church members to undercut efforts in national legislatures to prosecute child sex offenders, and cited lobbying attempts to limit how long former child victims can report the crimes after they become adults. The experts said the violations had allegedly been committed over decades in many countries with tens of thousands of victims.

US$90 A YEAR PROVIDES VITAL SUPPORT FOR SEXUAL ABUSE SURVIVORS IN AFRICA
|
|
JULY 1, 2021; UGANDA, AFRICA.
ECA is engaged at the international level with a Pope, cardinals and bishops and with well-known and important activists, all with big agendas and big ideas that we are proud to be a part of.
But ECA too is active and a very proud supporter in a special mission in Uganda that is small by every standard but we believe is as important.
In 2018, ECA helped a young Ugandan woman launch a program that is saving lives, one child at a time.
Janet Aguti is a wife, mother and a survivor/ activist who formed a non-profit called the Totya Platform dedicated to bringing awareness and ending physical and sexual violence, especially against women and girls, in Uganda.
An important aspect of her work is helping children, again mostly girls, who have been sexually assaulted or raped. Incredibly, 75% of girls in Uganda will experience sexual violence before the age of 18, a much higher rate than developed countries.
The Totya Program has achieved in this very short time the confidence of the people of Mpigi District where it is located. When a young child or young woman is abused Janet’s group is contacted. They have trained para-social workers who reach out to the victim and her family and provide a number of services including medical attention at the local hospital or medical clinic, medications and the Plan B pill, if necessary; they provide assistance in reporting the crime to the police and
follow up help with the legal process; and with counseling and weekly home visits.
Totya Platform receives at least 10 calls a month. Attached are 3 short but typical stories.
What has proved most valuable is the follow-up counseling and repeated visits to the village. The young women or girl child not only feels valued and supported but the presence of the para-social workers puts the village on notice someone is watching and paying attention.
Another remarkable aspect is the low cost. Initially, $30 dollars provides for the medical attention, medications and report to the police. The follow-up visits average $5 per month per victim for a cost of $60 for the year, totaling $90 per year per child. The success of the program is resulting in more calls than they can handle due to the lack of funds.
If you would like to help Janet and the Totya Platform click on the “DONATE TO ECA” button. Also please forward this newsletter to your family and friends.
