HAS ANYONE GOT THEIR FILES FROM THE CDF?
In December 2019, Pope Francis lifted the "Pontifical Secret" providing an opportunity for survivors of clergy sexual abuse to obtain information on their cases. The
Pope instructed Vatican officials to comply with civil laws and assist civil judicial authorities in investigating such cases. So ECA put this to the test.
In February this year, ECA Members and Argentine lawyers, Sergio Salinas and Lucas Lecour, and 3 Argentine Provolo survivors attempted to meet with Monsignor John Kennedy of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) in Rome to obtain files of the Argentine Provolo cases. We were met with silence. We tried to enter the CDF and we were turned away by the police. We are working with a journalist who is
writing a story about whether the Vatican has made any improvements in sharing information with victims about the cases of their abusers. Please let us know of your experience if you have tried in 2020 to approach the Vatican or their local bishops to get information. Click here to contact ECA.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE VATICAN INQUIRY ON CARDINAL McCARRICK?

Theodore McCarrick was the Archbishop of Washington DC from 2001 to 2006. Since his resignation from the College of Cardinals, he has been living in seclusion in a monastery in Kansas. However, although a much anticipated report is due, it's been quite silent in the Vatican on this matter. Journalists in Italy and the US have been providing probing new material on this
issue.

SEX ABUSE IN FIJI BY NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIAN CLERGY
For the last year 1 NEWS in New Zealand has been investigating claims of historic sexual abuse against children in Fiji’s Catholic church. Pacific correspondent Barbara Dreaver was in Fiji just before the COVID-19 lockdown and spoke to some of the victims of the alleged abuse who say as children they were abused and raped by New Zealand and Australian priests, brothers and teachers. But so
great is their shame they didn’t want to appear on camera, even unidentified.
ECA Member, Dr. Murray Heasley, from the New Zealand-based Network of Survivors in Faith Based Institution, told 1 News that Fiji’s Catholic schools were a “fertile ground for grooming” for sexual predators.
“Inside Fiji, it’s even more problematic because Fijian culture tends to hold these people in very high regard and give them massive access which they exploited,” he told the New Zealand television show.
